Magnetic St. , died Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at the
Norlite Nursing Center where
he had been a resident for
the past year.
He was born March 23,1902
in Grand Rapids, Mic~ .• to the
late Fran k and
Minnie DeVries
and attended
Grand Rapids
South
High
School. After
graduatin g
from
the
Moody Bible
Institute
of
Chicago in August 1925, he Mr. DeVries
served as musical director
and soloist for the Colegrove
Evangelistic Party throughout
Michigan for one year. He
was ordained as a minister in
the Evangelical Church in
1929 and served as Pastor in
Detroit, Caro, Grand Rapids,
Ionia and Niles, before coming to Marquette in 1943 to
serve as chaplain of the Marquette Branch Prison, a position he held until 1956. During this time he served not
only the prison proper, but also outlying camps at the Porcupine Mountains, Cusino
and Tahquamenon Falls. Also
during this period he served
as Pastor of the Big Bay
Presbyterian Church . From
1956-1969 he served as Pastor of the Trout Creek Presbyterian Church. At that time he
joined the staff. of WDMJ-FM
as a part 1me broadcaster
from 1969-1976. Upon formation of the Christian Broadcasting Station, WHWL-FM ,
he became a regular staff
member, Saturdays and Suny.s..Jn that ca12._aci!Y he devetopeci ana proaucea a two
hour program entitled "God's
World Today" which appeared
on both stations from 6 to 8
AM each Sunday. He was a
member of the Detroit Conference
of the
United
Methodist Church, and associated with the First United
Methodist Church after moving to Marquette. He was a
member of the Rotary Club
•from 1943-1952, the Kiwanis
Club from 1952-1958, and
was also a former member of
the Saturday Music Club.
Arthur is survived by his
wife Grace, whom he married
on August 12,1925, a daughter Jacqueline (Marvin) Heitman of Marquette, a son Donald C. DeVries of Marquette,
a brother Rev. Harold DeVries of Bloomington, MN,
five grandchildren, three
great grandchildren and nu merous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held
at 11 :00 AM Saturday, October 21, 2000 in the First United Methodist Church with
Rev. Stephen Rhoades and
Rev. Ross Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in Park
Cemetery with Keith Kepler,
Henry Summers, Marvin Heitman and Jim Smeberg acting
as pallbearers. Visitation will
be from 4 to 8 pm Friday at
the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home.

Grace was born in East Lowell, Maine and moved to Detroit as a girl. She was married to
Arthur for 75 years. They served many of the small country churches in the Upper Peninsula.
Grace loved her family, her church and her many friends .
